200 BLOCK OF NORTH 4TH AVENUE
The Tucson Police Department is investigating an early morning homicide that took place near downtown.
On August 19, 2015 at approximately 2:30 a.m., officers from Operations Division Downtown responded to the area of North 3rd Avenue and East 8th Street after receiving reports of shots being fired in the area. Upon arrival, officers were unable to locate a scene at that location. As they continued their investigation, they located multiple witnesses on 4th Ave. Witnesses told police that a vehicle had been traveling southbound on 4th Avenue between 8th Street and 9th Street when they saw multiple shots being fired from the vehicle. It was unclear if the occupants were firing at another vehicle or at a person in the area. While officers were gathering information from witnesses, St. Mary’s Hospital called police to advise that an adult male had been dropped off in the emergency room with multiple gunshot wounds. Shortly after arrival at the hospital the subject was pronounced deceased.
Detectives are currently working several investigative leads, but are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 911 or 88-CRIME. Additional details will be released as they become available.
The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Rogelio Zarate. Next of kin has been notified.
